One of Botswana’s longest running safari camps and still one of the few that is privately owned, Xakanaxa specialises inauthentic safari ambience in one of the Moremi’s best locations. On the banks of the Khwai River and overlooking the lagoon that gives the camp its name, the 12 tented rooms are understated and stylish inside, with wood furnishings, fans and natural colour schemes creating a traditional feel. Elevated relatively high on wooden decks, each has a private veranda with outstanding views out to the verdant waterways. The camp has a thatched, open sided lounge and bar area, a dining room, a viewing deck next to the river and a decked campfire area for evening drinks.
All of these creature comforts, including a small plunge pool for cooling off between activities, support languid spare time game viewing and comfort, but Xakanaxa is really about maximising the wildlife viewing opportunities on your two daily guided activities. Game drives dominate for those seeking the biggest volumes and diversity of animals, while boat cruises get you to otherwise inaccessible areas and permit appreciation of the full, watery spectacle of the Okavango Delta. Short mokoro trips can also be incorporated into boating activities, while full day excursions might also be possible on request. However you choose to spend your time at Xakanaxa, we have no hesitation in recommending it as one of the Moremi’s most characterful camps.
