Very similar to &Beyond’s Chobe semi-permanent tented safaris, but with an edgier, more authentic feel by virtue of the remote location, Savute Under Canvas is an exciting way to discover a legendary area. Savute is a desert-like wilderness packed with elephants and warring lions and hyenas, a place where the feeling of having just a canvas sheet separating you from the night-time African bush provides a visceral thrill. As with the Chobe project, the camp is moved frequently to utilise a different site within the mopane woodland that punctuates Savute’s more open savannah and marshland environs.

There are never more than five guest tents at a time, traditional but extremely comfortable with their hot al fresco bucket showers and soft, comfortable beds. Meals are enjoyed communally under a tented structure, with a campfire set up each night for pre and post dinner drinks. The standards of service and guiding are comparable with &Beyond’s permanent luxury lodges, with activities focused around twice daily game drives to search for the area’s renowned big game. For those wanting to discover two very different corners of the Chobe National Park, the two Under Canvas camps combine perfectly, or they make a great safari starting point before heading to the Okavango Delta.
